Company History
In 1964 the first METRO Store was inaugurated in Germany. The new concept of a self service wholesale store was invented by Prof. Dr. Otto Beisheim and is known as the METRO-Cash & Carry-Formula.
This distribution system is so successful, that today METRO is the indisputable number 1 in the Cash & Carry business throughout Europe and worldwide.
We are proud to say that the first step towards becoming an international group was a result of the establishment of METRO Cash & Carry in Austria. In 1971 METRO opened its gates in Vienna-Vösendorf, which was not only the first Metro store in Austria, but also the first METRO store outside Germany.
Today METRO Cash & Carry Österreich GmbH operates 12 wholesale stores. The country headquarters and board of directors are situated in Vienna-Vösendorf:
