METRO has had a quality assurance department for over 10 years. In the meantime, a group-wide international quality assurance system has been developed.
The quality managers in charge of each "METRO Land", all of them food chemists, food technologists, nutritionists or veterinarians, organise and coordinate the inspection and safeguarding of the entire food assortment.
With this international quality assurance management system, METRO takes a pioneering role in food trade.
In trans-shipment centres and central warehouses, the members of the quality assurance department inspect the incoming produce according to sensory aspects. The chemical/ microbiological inspection of the produce is conducted by certified independent laboratories.
The tasks of quality assurance consist predominantly in preventive measures. These measures are taken at the beginning of a "product's life" and must guarantee subsequent smooth and low-complaint handling of the product. The following areas illustrate where quality assurance is implemented and/or applied.
Freshness/ cold chain/ logistics
Generic brand products and suppliers
Meat
Fresh fish
Fruit & vegetables
METRO C&C markets
Product inspections and supplier audits:
- Auditing and evaluation of suppliers and producers according to the"International Food Standard" (IFS)
- Ongoing product inspections by a certified laboratory
All METRO C&C markets in Austria are constantly inspected by experts of the "Lebensmittelversuchsanstalt" (food inspection institute) located in the 19th district of Vienna, a testing agency accredited according to ISO 45004, for compliance with the provisions under food law and METRO's internal inspection system.
With its international quality assurance system, METRO can conduct on-the-spot inspections of food producers and products all over the world and identify unsafe suppliers or faulty products already at their origin.
Further information about quality assurance within the METRO group can be found here.
